Benzodiazepines

This is the most common used class of hypnotics. They bind unselectively to the GABAa receptor. This group of drugs includes diazepam, lorazepam, nitrazepam, midazolam ortemazepam. However with these drugs it is possible to develop dependence and tolerance, most particularly when used over long periods of time.

Non-benzodiazepines

This group of drugs includes nonbenzodiazepines, zopiclone and zolpidem. They are more selective for GABAa receptor and therefore may have less side effects, however it is not certain that these drugs are superior to the benzodiazepines

Anti-histamines

The antihistamine diphenhydramine is used in non prescription sleep aids. However its effectiveness may decrease after prolonged use and sleepiness on the next day is higher than for newer prescription drugs. On the positive side this type of drug does not have issues with dependence.

Anti-depressants

Another potential cure for insomnia is anti depressants. Anti-depressants like mirtazapine, doxepin or trazodone act as a sedative also, and they are prescribed off label to mitigate insomnia. However these drugs have major draw backs as they have ant cholinergic, antihistaminergic, and antiadrenergic effects which can lead to many unwanted side effects.

Atypical anti-psychotics

Small doses of these such as Seroquel (quetiapine) can have a sedative effect, but there is issues with cognitive and neurological side effects, so it is not a great choice for curing insomnia.

Melatonin

Melatonin is a hormone found in all living creatures and its levels vary during the daily cycle. It has been effective in regulating the sleep cycle of some insomniac patients, however there is not extensive data regarding its usefulness as a treatment for insomnia. Melatonin agonists, for example Rozerem (Ramelteon) generally seem to lack the issues with abuse and dependence. They have relatively small side effects and a lower chance of triggering morning sleepiness.

Valerian

The herb valerian has undergone multiple studies and appears to have a modestly positive effect on curing insomnia. Other herbs such as chamomile, lavender, passion flower or hops may also have a positive effect.

Magnesium

Insomnia may be a symptom of magnesium deficiency or low magnesium levels. So by changing diet to one which contains more magnesium then sleep may be improved if magnesium deficiency was the root cause.

Cognitive behavior therapy

Studies which have been done in the search for a cure for insomnia have recently indicate that cognitive behavior therapy can have a greater effect than medication to alleviate insomnia. The basis of this therapy is to teach better sleeping habits and remove non productive assumptions about sleep. Also it may be helpful to recondition the body to only associate the bed with sleeping, so other activities such as reading or watching TV should be done else where.

Relaxation techniques

The more relaxed a person is the more likely they are to get a good nights sleep, so relaxation techniques such as meditation or Yoga can lead to lower stress levels, helping to alleviate insomnia if stress was the root cause of the insomnia. Anything which reduces the levels of stress or anxiety may have a positive effect on the insomnia.

Sleep restriction

A potential cure for insomnia is to actually reduce sleep. Some insomnia sufferers spend too much time in bed attempting to get to sleep. If this is the case then it may help to restrict sleep with the guiding hand of a doctor. The treatment involves going to bed later or getting up earlier and increasing the time in bed until a normal sleeping pattern is reached.
